Agadir City in Berber means "fortified granary". Thanks to the Portuguese in the sixteenth century, the city knew the beginning of its history. The Portuguese will erect a fortress called "Santa Cruz of Cape Ghir " that would later become the district Forti.
After more than six months of conflict in 1541, the founder of the dynasty Saadienne Ech Cheikh Mohamed liberated the city. To avoid the return of Portuguese, the son of Mohammed Ech Cheikh built a kasbah overlooking the ocean.
This is the seventeenth century as the port of Agadir took off. European traders fought the influence of the port because the port has become the outlet of the
Sudan. Agadir city exported many goods throughout the seventeenth century such as dates, wax, spices and gold.
In the eighteenth century the port of Agadir was closed because the Alawite dynasty came to power in Morocco. This is the Sultan Mohammed Ben Abdallah, who will also take the decision to transfer the activities of the port of Agadir to the port of Essaouira.
In 1911, Kaiser Wilhelm II sent a cruiser in the harbor of Agadir and tried to install a naval base, but France did not agree and proposed a law on the German rights. After long discussions the Franch will cede part of Congo to Germany, which would no longer issue any imperialist interests in Morocco.
In 1930, the city became one of the stages of airmail. On February 29, 1960 fifteen seconds of earthquake killed about 15000 people. Agadir city became more modern thanks to the reconstruction made by famous architects after that.
