Essaouira city

Essaouira city is such a unique place to visit. The first time I went there I fell in love with it's narrow streets and blue painted houses. It has has one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen and the small port filled with small blue fishing boats is such a pleasure to watch. I understood why artists such as jimi Hendrix himself liked this town.

Essaouira City was controlled first by the Phoenicians, then by the Carthaginians in the fifth century BC and finally by the Romans until AD 25. The Moroccan side of the Roman Empire became known as the province Mauritania Tingitana. Its capital was Volubilis.

Essaouira

During this period, the city of Essaouira was known for its production of purple. The Vandals took power of Mauritania Tingitana in 429 just before the fall of the Roman Empire.

The Vandals were expelled by the Byzantine general Belisario in 533. From that date the Byzantines took power.

Essaouira is inhabited by the Berbers who fought for the independence of the Umayyad dynasty, between the seventh and tenth centuries.

The Portuguese invaded the Moroccan coast in the fifteenth century. They also conquer Ceuta, Agadir, Melilla, Asilah, Larache, Casablanca and El Jadida.

The kingdom was under the dominance of the Alaoui dynasty in 1578 as the Portuguese and Spanish lost three kings with the legendary King Sebastian.

Essaouira

In 1764 Sultan Sidi Mohammed ben Abdellah completely rebuilt Essaouira. The port was the largest trade through Morocco to Europe.

It was the seaport of Timbuktu. It has also known the installation of foreign consulates, such as Brazil, Portugal or Denmark.

Essaouira City was a bridge between Africa and the rest of the world.

Because of the city of Casablanca that took all her power, Essaouira lost its monopoly. At the end of the twentieth century, Essaouira City experienced a new life thanks to some famous personalities and artists who either visited or lived there. Essaouira

So far the city is known for being a beautiful tourist base but also for its surfing. But the urban core is deteriorating because of the natural time.

To do in Essaouira :
