Moroccan Cities

so, what do we know about the Moroccan cities?

Every Moroccan city is unique and has a distinctive element to it. What keeps amazing me is the fact that I never get bored in Morocco with everything so different from one region to the other. The difference is astonishing not only in the architecture of the cities but also in the climate, the language, the culture, the food and almost everything.

Now, come with me I am going to give you the tour dejour of a beautiful city. The city of Fez which is the oldest of the imperial cities.

It was founded in 190 AH by Idriss II. Fez is located in the plain Saïss, it became a major city whose Marinid dynasty made its capital in the late thirteenth century.

Fez

Fez's fame brought students and scholars of Muslims, Jews and Christians from all walks of life. It has quickly become the intellectual capital but also an economic capital. This is also the case for other Moroccan cities like Marrakech.

The Medina is the living witness of the past and continues to keep the traditions over time. The Medina of Fez is classified World Heritage by UNESCO.

Fes is composed of two cities:

-Fes el Bali created in 809 by Idrissides.

In Fez el Bali you will discover two most important monuments built in the ninth century. First Mosque Karaouiyine founded in 859 by Lala (lady) Fatima al Fihria. Its minaret is built in 955. Since its construction the mosque is at the heart of the city where you can find around the souks.

The second monument is the Andalusian Mosque built in 860 by Lala (lady) Meriem El Fihria. Its peculiarity is a large door decorated with a canopy tiles and carved wood.

-The Cherratine Madrassah built in 1670.

In Fez Jdid the main monument is the Royal Palace built in the thirteenth century. Place of Alawites fitted in 1968. It gives a superb view of the Palais Royal Protestant. By the way in almost all Moroccan cities you will notice the presence of an old medina(city) which is usually built with clay bricks.

Not far from the Royal Palace you will reach the quarter Fez Jdid and you'll find all sorts of businesses for shoppinf and restaurants.
