Taroudant City

Taroudant city is the radiant capital of the Souss.  I am so proud my parents  are  soussi of this region. It is located south of Morocco and about 80 km from Agadir city.

Taroudant is indeed one of the oldest cities in the country. Its foundation goes back to a period before the Roman occupation. This city has its own charm and sweetness with its ocher walls and the sound of rustling palm trees.

Taroudant The origin of the name Berber Taroudant is enigmatic. Some legends associate the name of a Syrian princess who moved into the area and was known as "Queen Roudana”.

Others say the berber phrase “Tarou ddante " means: the children were washed away. This is coming from a story of a Berber woman that was doing laundry in the river when the flood took away her children.

Known since antiquity, the history is there to witness the city's past with its adobe walls and five towers topped with broken doors dating from the eighteenth century.

In the early 20th century the city was a bastion of anti-colonialisTaroudant citym, rebelling against the French colonizers.

Hassan Al Wazzan, better known in our latitudes as Leo Africanus, had noticed during his travels that the people of Taroudant city, are "peaceful people who never offend their neighbors."

Taroudant city is known for its argan oil and its famous argan cooperatives that grow only in south-west Morocco.

In the dry season, you can admire the picturesque scene of goats climbing trees to devour the fruit. It is an oil of high quality from which nutritional and cosmetics ingredients are derived.

Before being known for its agriculture, Taroudant city was reported as an urban center of a great civilization.

After admiring the colors of spices, clothes and flowers from the Berber market, you'll be struck by the indigo blue of women's clothes reminiscent of desert men who frequented Taroudant with caravans.taroudant kasbah

Dakka Roudania and rhythms

Taroudant city is the place of Dakka Roudania. Each time you enter the grounds of the city in the afternoons you will find "Deka roudania” which is a traditional folklore practiced by the natives.

Taroudant dakka

Originally from the Taroudant region, the Dakka, which means "strike" is based mainly on the rhythm (percussion hand clapping, drums) dancing and singing.

Today, music groups, "dekas" crisscross number of countries, and bearing the banner of Taroudant. Noted among them is the predominant role of Askaro Smail and the Hmadcha who dedicated to Taroudant a special imprint single called El Grehant Beldia.

The first edition of the Festival "Dekka Roudania" was held on 12 to 14 May 2005 in Taroudant city, at the initiative of the Delegation of the Ministry of Culture which organized it, in collaboration with municipal and provincial councils of the city.

This cultural event is known for the participation of several groups of the art of Dekka representing the cities of Marrakech, Essaouira and Demnat. These groups interpret a variety of genres like the rhythmic art of Dekka in Taroudant. The cradle of this musical genre is rooted in the traditional culture of the region.

Taroudant city is also the place for poetry called “Melhoun”. There are so many here with a special thought for El Hadj Omar Bouri. The people of this city themselves are filled with the gift of God, living in a generous nature. They are naturally a bit of beautiful soul.

I did some research about tour providers of this  dreamy city and I found trip advisor has the best deals.
